Whip Bolero

 

Yarn : 

Vipe, Lerke, 6 hanks main color and 1 contrasting color for “the whip” (optional)

Needles : 

4 mm

Notions  : 

cable to hold stitches, sewing needle, crochet needle 3

Notes:

Bolero has raglan sleeves worked in pattern. Edges are worked separately for the sleeve and bottom back, but otherwise together with main body

Stitches :

Cable thru 10 stitches

Stockinette stitch

Pattern :

Right side row : *ssk, yo* across, wrong side : *p* across

Right side row : *k2tog, yo* across, wrong side : *p* across

Body :

Lower edge

Cast on 13 stitches with provisional cast on. Knit one row

Work a stripe of cable for the lower edge from the middle out

*Row 1: lift with yarn in front, p2, k10

Row 2: p10, k3

Row 3: same as row 1

Row 4: same as row 2

Row 5 : lift with yarn in front, p2, put 5 stitches on cable needle hold in front, k5, k5 from the cable needle

Row6, 8 and 10 : same as row 2

Row 7 and  9  : same as row 1

Repeat Rows 1 to 10 (*to *) 7 more times. Keep stitches on holder

Remove provisional cast and pick up stitches. From there

*Row 1: k10, p3

Row 2: : lift with yarn in front, k2,p10

Row 3: same as row 1

Row 4: same as row 2

Row 5 : put 5 stitches on cable needle hold in back, k5, k5 from the cable needle, p3

Row6, 8 and 10 : same as row 2

Row 7 and  9  : same as row 1

Repeat Rows 1 to 10 (*to *) 7 more times. Keep stitches on holder

Main Body

Pick up 80 stitches along the flat side (not the cable side) of the lower edge. Move all stitches to 1 needle as follows right side facing : 12 s from right end of lower edge, place marker, last s from right end of lower edge , 80 picked up s, first s from left side lower edge, place marker, 12 s from left end of lower edge. 106 s total.

Row1: k10, p2, k1, slip m, knit to next m, slip m, k1, p2, k10

Row 2 : p10, k2, p1, slip m, purl to next m, slip m, p1, k2, p10

*Row 3 : k10, p2, k1, slip m, yo, knit to next m, yo, slip m, k1, p2, k10

Row 4 : same as row 2

Row 5 : put 5 stitches on cable needle hold in back, k5, k5 from the cable needle, p2, k1, slip m, yo, knit to next m, yo, slip m, k1, p2, put 5 stitches on cable needle hold in front, k5, k5 from the cable needle

Row 6 : same as row 2

Row 7,9 and 11 : same as row 3

There are now 116 stiches.

Repeat * * (Row 3 to Row 12) 4 more times. There are now 156 s and 52 rows from lower edge.

Row 54 : p10, k2, p1, slip m, purl to next m, slip m, p1, k2, p10 (same as row 2)

 Row 55 : put 5 stitches on cable needle hold in back, k5, k5 from the cable needle, p2, k1, slip m,  knit to next m, slip m, k1, p2, put 5 stitches on cable needle hold in front, k5, k5 from the cable needle

Row 56, 58, and 60 : same as row 54

Row 57, 59, and 61 : same as Row 53 **

Repeat rows ** to ** (53 to 62) 3 more times. There are now 156 s and 92 rows.

Row 93 : p10, k2, p1, slip m, p24, bind off 8, p66 ,bind off 8, p24 to next m, slip m, p1, k2, p10.

Place s on holder and put work aside whiles sleeves are created

Right Sleeve

Sleeve edge

Cast on 13 stitches with provisional cast on. Knit one row

Work a stripe of cable for the lower edge in round and join.

*Row 1: lift with yarn in front, p2, k10

Row 2: p10, k3

Row 3: same as row 1

Row 4: same as row 2

Row 5 : lift with yarn in front, p2, put 5 stitches on cable needle hold in front, k5, k5 from the cable needle

Row6, 8 and 10 : same as row 2

Row 7 and  9  : same as row 1

Repeat Rows 1 to 10 (*to *) 5 more times.

Remove provisional cast and pick up stitches.

Join lower edge in round.

Sleeve

Pick up 32 stitches along the flat side (not the cable side) of the sleeve edge and place on a circular needle.

**Row 1 : knit

Row 2 : *k2tog, yo* across

Row 3, 5, 7 and 9 same as Row 1

Row 4, 6 and 8 same as Row 2

Row 10 : *k2tog, yo* to the last 2 s, k1, yo, k1, yo**

Repeat ** to ** (Rows 1 to 10) 10 more times.

There is now 54 s and 110 rows.

Row 111 : k23, bind off 8, k23

Left Sleeve

Sleeve edge

Cast on 13 stitches with provisional cast on. Knit one row

Work a stripe of cable for the lower edge in round and join.

*Row 1: k10, p3

Row 2: : lift with yarn in front, k2,p10

Row 3: same as row 1

Row 4: same as row 2

Row 5 : put 5 stitches on cable needle hold in back, k5, k5 from the cable needle, p3

Row6, 8 and 10 : same as row 2

Row 7 and  9  : same as row 1

Repeat Rows 1 to 10 (*to *) 5 more times. Keep stitches on holder.

Remove provisional cast and pick up stitches.

Join lower edge in round.

Sleeve

Pick up 32 stitches along the flat side (not the cable side) of the sleeve edge and place on a circular needle.

**Row 1 : knit

Row 2 : * ssk, yo * across

Row 3, 5, 7 and 9 same as Row 1

Row 4, 6 and 8 same as Row 2

Row 10 : * ssk, yo * to the last 2 s, k1, yo, k1, yo**

Repeat ** to ** (Rows 1 to 10) 10 more times.

There is now 54 s and 110 rows.

Row 111 : k23, bind off 8, k23

Shoulders and Neck

Set all parts of the bolero on 1 needle (circular recommended) to continue as 1 piece (so body right front side, right sleeve, body back, left sleeve, body left side). Set markers between body and sleeve sections (there should be 6 markers now – 4 for the sleeves and 2 for the edges).  Make sure under arm bind off sections on body and sleeves face each other

Repeat ** to ** (row 94 to 103) until there is only 2 s for each sleeve. There should be 139 rows from lower edge and  52 s remaining (13 for each edge, 1 for each front, 2 for each sleeve and 20 for the back).

Upper edge

Upper edge is worked by continuing to work the edge stiches only joining 1 s from the front/sleeve/back every other row. At the end the 2 edges join in the middle

Right side

*Row 1: k10, p2, ssk (last s of the  edge with front s remaining), turn

Row 2: : lift with yarn in front, k2,p10

Row 3: put 5 stitches on cable needle hold in back, k5, k5 from the cable needle, p2, ssk (last s of the edge with first sleeve s remaining), turn

Row 4: same as row 2

Row 5 : k10, p2, ssk (last s of the  edge with sleeve  s remaining), turn

Row 6 : same as row 2

Row 7 : k10, p2, ssk (last s of the  edge with 1 s from the back), turn

Finnishing

Sew in holes under the sleeves.

Work an i-cord in contrasting color and tread into the cable edge all around (optional).
